Each year more than 300,000 Oklahomans cast their vote to celebrate and recognize the best our community has to offer in The Oklahoman’s Readers’ Choice Awards. For six years in a row, the voters have spoken and Dr. James Bond has been named Best Orthopedic Surgeon.
Dr. Bond’s journey to become an orthopedic surgeon was unique. During his senior year of college, his single mother was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. An extremely positive experience with oncologist, Dr. Charles Strnad, not only saved his mom’s life, but also changed the trajectory of Bond’s career.
“I had every intention of becoming an English teacher and basketball coach, but because of the experience with my mom, I knew that I was being called to become a physician. I wanted to emulate the profound experience my family had when an outstanding oncologist made us feel like we were more than a number, we were important and he was going to give everything he had to ensure my mom got better,” remembered Bond.
Because of Bond’s background in sports, orthopedics was a natural fit. With the same patient-centric focus Dr. Strand had given his family, Dr. Bond strives to provide patients a positive experience from the minute they walk into his clinic until they walk out of the clinic minus their crutches, brace or cast. It is common for Bond to attend sporting events of athletes following their surgery so he can celebrate their successful return to sports with them!
“I have always had a desire to be the best, but quickly realized that to be the best, I needed to surround myself with great people. My team is truly a team and we approach patient care in a positive upbeat manner. I believe that you have to look a patient in the eye, tell them the truth, listen, encourage and work together as a team to achieve the best possible outcomes. It also helps to have a little fun and sing. Who says physicians can’t be fun? I think joy is contagious and can have a positive impact on a patient’s recovery,” Dr. Bond said.
The Readers’ Choice Award is a reflection of Bond’s skill as a surgeon, but also of his unique philosophy towards patient care. Congratulations, Dr. Bond on this esteemed honor!
